In 2020 we had to relocate from our home for reasons beyond our control. We had lived there for 11 years and during this time we had accumulated a lot of things. Storage was never a problem. A huge apartment in a building from 1796, an outhouse and a woodshed. In preparation for our move we had to make some hard decisions: sell, store or throw away. Above all, the Tahe Marine Reval Midi sea kayak had to be dealt with. 515 cm (203 inches) long, with a witdth of 56 cm (22 inches) and weighing 28 kilograms (62 lbs). In wintertime it rested on two roof beams in the outhouse. Sweden’s geography is heavily defined by water, with around 40,000 km² of its total area consisting of lakes, rivers, and streams. However, it's hard to get kayak storage in Stockholm. A good friend came to the rescue. The kayak was placed on public ground adjacent to his house and property as a temporary solution. The years went by and no permanent solution. I had scoped out a local boat/kayak club only 400 metres (a quarter of a mile) from our new home. I paid the yearly queue fee and waited for my turn. I finally got a kayak spot. I accepted and waited for instructions for when and how I could utilise it. The instructions never came. On the night to 16 July 2024 the club house burned to the ground, including the kayak storage. And in the spring of 2025 the boat club got evicted. The boat club didn't own the land. The property owner had other plans for the area. Back to the drawing board. I began to think in wider terms and asked a longtime friend who lives in the small town were I grew up about kayak storage. And, what do you know. Problem solved directly. On the upside, low cost, beautiful location and direct accesss to the outer archipelago. On the downside, one hour trip (one-way) with the commuter train. Two weeks ago we transported the kayak to its new location. I didn't know what to expect. The kayak had been meticulously wrapped in tarp. Six years is a long time and tough weather conditions and temperature fluctuations could lead to moisture problems which in turn could lead to mold. But, the kayak was in mint condition (see image). The transportation went well. It's now stored in a kayak rack in a boat house. Free at last.
