"Singing Bones re-release"

The Handsome Family have been busy. They have released eleven original albums, two live albums and two albums with covers, demos and outtakes. I've got their complete catalogue. However, I think it's safe to say that over time the production rate has declined. It's not strange. They were formed in 1993(!) and have worked hard for so long. The injustices in the "gothic country" genre are numerous, extensive and outrageous. But, sometimes good and unexpected things happens. The Handsome Family's song "Far From Any Road" was selected as the theme song for HBO's 2014 crime drama True Detective by the show's music director, T-Bone Burnett. The song made them known to a much wider audience. The Handsome Family was perceived as a "new" band with a "new" song. At the time, the band had been active for 20 years and the song itself was released on the album Singing Bones, then 10 years old. Their last album, Hollow, was released in 2023. I thought they were making a new album. Instead, Singing Bones was re-released on May 8, 2026. The album is newly remastered and available on vinyl. The reissue expands upon the original release with the bonus disc Invisible Bones. This deluxe CD and digital inclusion tacks on 12 previously unreleased demos and live recordings. What do I make of this? An attempt to capitalize on the success of "Far From Any Road" hype? A re-release to support their European tour? A 23-year anniversary? Or all of the above? Singing Bones is definitely one of their better albums with songs like "The Forgotten Lake", "The Bottomless Hole", "Far from Any Road", "Fallen Peaches" and "Whitehaven". However, their undisputed masterpiece is "Through the Trees".
